“Rootless” a Film Installation
I filmed and exhibited this piece for my experimental film class while getting my Bachelors degree in media production. Through “Rootless” I explored exhibition, taking Sharon Lockhart’s Pine Flat as inspiration for the kind of viewer experience I wanted to employ. In consideration of the viewer, I pictured them standing on the projected grass, in front of the window outline the film was projected through, having the same kind of experience I was having; being in a manufactured space, but imagining a more inviting natural one to get lost in.
What new meaning could I create through space? How could the natural environment be brought into an “unnatural” space and interact with it? I projected my piece in this sort of in-between state, not necessarily a “black box” or a “white cube,” to capitalize on the in-between space that makes us reflect on how presentation informs how we receive and understand art.
